Gemma Harris leads Seminoles to 2nd Place finish at Lady Eagle Invitational

Seminole Junior Gemma Harris won the Lady Eagle Women’s Golf Invitational at Cypress Head Golf Club which finished April 6th. She led the Florida State’s ‘B’ team to a second place finish in the team standings. For Harris, it was her first career victory in only her third event since joining the team as a freshman in 2001.


Harris (Sheffield, England) posted a 79 in the first round which left her in third. She finished the event with a 77, on the par 72 course, which was tied for the best score of anyone in the tournament. She finished the 36-hole event at plus 12 with a combined score of 156. Her nearest competition was three strokes back.


Freshman Michelle Steakin (Wellington, FL) finished tied for eighth with consistent scores of 83 and finished 10 strokes back. Junior Kristina Prestipino (Coral Springs, Fla.), competing in only her fifth event of her career, finished in 12th place and 13 strokes back. Junior Amy Harris (Sheffield, England) also competed and finished in 18th place out of 56 players. This was her best finish at the event in which she competed in last year. Her previous best was 24th place. Sophomore Jennifer Harvey (Fairfax Station, VA) finished in 43rd place.


Florida State finished as the runner-up in the team standings to Daytona Beach Community College. The Seminoles posted the best team score in the final round to finish one stroke back.


Kristy McLaughlin led the first place finishing Lady Falcons from Daytona Beach by finishing third and four strokes back. Hilary Hurley of Embry-Riddle finished second and three strokes back. The other third place finisher was Carrie Paul of Rend Lake.
