Genesis Choice And Jamil Burrell To Be Seminoles

Nov. 8, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University women’s basketball
Head Coach Sue Semrau has announced the signing of Street & Smith All
American Genesis Choice, a 6-2 post from Orlando, Fla., and Street &
Smith honorable mention All-American Jamil Burrell, a 5-10 guard from
Bartow, Fla., to National Letters of Intent to play for the Seminoles in
2001-02.

“I am extremely pleased that two of the top players in the state
have chosen to stay home for their college careers,” Semrau said. “Both
Genesis and Jamil are excited about being Seminoles, which gives us
momentum. They are seeing the growth in our program at Florida State and
want to be a part of building something very special here.”

Regarded as one of the nation’s top 25 high school players by
Street & Smith, Choice was also a member of the USA Today All-Junior Team.
A two-time Class 6A All-State, All-Orange County and All-Metro Conference
selection from Maynard Evans High School, she has averaged 18 points and 10
rebounds throughout her career. Recently pegged the third-best player in
the state of Florida’s by the St. Pete Times, Choice also garnered
Reebok/WBCA Underclass All-American honors.

“Genesis will bring a lot of things to our program,” Semrau said.
“She’s very talented and very versatile. She can play both the post and on
the perimeter. She’s an aggressive player, and with the loss of Brooke
Wyckoff next year to graduation, I think she will be somebody who can play
that kind of role for us in the future. Genesis is a very intelligent
young lady who will excel in the classroom, as well as on the court. She
has a lot of personality that she will bring to our program which is
something I really love to have.”

Burrell is Bartow High School’s all-time leading scorer with 1,558
career points through three seasons and with 795 career rebounds, is
nearing the school’s all-time rebounding mark. Averaging 23 points and 10
rebounds per game throughout her career, Burrell has led Polk County in
scoring three consecutive years. Burrell, who has played on numerous
Florida all-star teams and AAU traveling teams, was selected to the first
team Class 4A All-State team. She is a three-time first team all-county
selection by both the Ledger and News Chief and was pegged the Player of
the Year for both publications in 1999-2000.

“Jamil is an exceptional athlete who is already her school’s
all-time leading scorer and may break the rebounding record this year,”
Semrau said. “She’s a great defensive player and will give us more size on
the permiter. As a person, student and athlete, she’s the total package.”

Choice and Burrell are two of four of the state of Florida’s top
prep players who have signed with Florida State in the past two years.

“We’re very pleased that Genesis and Jamil will play in a state
that is familiar with them as high school players and will have the
opportunity to watch them grow as collegiate players,” Semrau said. “The
thought of Lauren Bradley, Shinikki Whiting, Genesis Choice and Jamil
Burrell all on the same team is very exciting.”
