Getting To Know: Rylan Harvey

Dec. 6, 2013

Rylan Harvey is learning to balance all aspects of college life as a student-athlete.

What has been the most challenging part of college so far?
It would have to be time management, for sure. When I first got here, I was so worried about impressing the coaches and being that freshman that is like, here to play, here to start, that I kind of forgot about school work. Now I have had to catch up on the school work part, which has been tough, but Coacha has been really great with helping me balance it all. So it is getting easier.

What made you choose Florida State?
First of all the coaches. When I first met them, they were awesome. They were the chill, fun coaches that would have a good time with us, and not like the strict ones. They have the goals that I want to achieve, like going to the World Series. And then I came on my visit and the campus was just beautiful. I was like, `I can see myself here for sure.’

If you could never play softball again, what would you do?
I would probably wakeboard, honestly. I love the water. So like wakeboarding, tubing and longboarding, I’d do that all the time. Those are some of my favorite things.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Definitely would be flying. I would love to fly. I think it would be so cool to just take off and get out of here, you know?

What is your favorite way to get exercise?
I’m not really a sprinter or anything like that, but when I need to clear my head, I’ll just put my headphones in and go out for a run. Just jog it off and have some alone time.

What is your favorite book, or a book you think everyone should read?
My favorite book is the Bible. I think everyone should read the Bible and see how much power God really has, and how relieved you can feel when you have just read and talked to him a little bit.

Do you have any pets?
Yes. I have a dog, a little basset hound named Hank. We have a cat named Fat Boy, because he’s…fat. And then I have a goat named Chody. Everyone thinks it is weird that we have a pet goat, because we’re from Texas. But he’s our pet.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned from your parents?
Probably `be true to yourself’ and `don’t change for anyone.’ Another one would be `God is always there for you.’

What is the best vacation you have ever been on?
My dad works overseas, so once they took us to Paris, France. That was like, the coolest thing ever. My dad brought a bucket of balls so I got to pitch under the Louvre. So that was really cool.

If you could live at any time in history, when would it be?
Probably the 60s. They just seemed so relaxed and carefree. I feel like that would be a cool time to live.

What is your favorite non-athletic part of Florida State?
The scenery. We’ll go on walks – me and some of the other girls on the team – and it is just so cool to see the buildings they have for school and stuff. The libraries are amazing here. No other school quite has libraries like here, they are amazing. So probably the academic parts with the libraries and the scenery.
