Gold Blanks Garnet 7-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Gold squad jumped out to an early lead and never looked back cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Garnet team Thursday night in the 31st annual Garnet & Gold game on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.

Hayden Kelly (Inverness, Fla.) and Jackson Owens (Lake Dallas, Texas) paced the Gold team’s 13-hit attack with three hits apiece, while Gage West (Tallahassee, Fla.) collected two hits for the second straight game and finished the night with a game-high three RBI. Ben DeLuzio (Windermere, Fla.) also registered two hits with a double and single as he scored once and drove in a run.

“I am very pleased with what I have seen from our players these past two days, but we still have a long way to go,” Florida State head coach Mike Martin said. “The enthusiasm and effort have been there the entire fall. As a staff and as a team, we are looking forward to continuing to improve in the off season and getting stronger.”

Four pitchers on the Gold squad held the Garnet team to just three hits on the night.

Gold starter Andrew Karp allowed just one hit and one walk in 2.0 innings of work to earn the win. The freshman right hander from Winter Garden, Fla., finished the night with three strikeouts.

Taylor Folsom (Doerun, Ga.) and Andy Ward (Oviedo, Fla.) both threw 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings in relief walking one and striking out two. Ed Voyles (Atlanta, Ga.) worked 2.0 innings allowing two hits and a walk as he struck out three.

Dylan Busby (Sarasota, Fla.), Nick Graganella (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Timmy Delph (Bartow, Fla.) each had one hit to lead the Garnet.

Drew Carlton (Lakeland, Fla.) suffered the loss for the Garnet team as the freshman right hander gave up four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.

Alec Byrd (Miami Shores, Fla.) worked 2.0 scoreless innings allowing three hits while striking out one. Jim Voyles (Atlanta, Ga.) allowed two runs on three hits as he walked two and struck out two in 2.0 innings, while Will Zirzow (Jacksonville, Fla.) issued a run on two hits in an inning of work.

Gold wasted very little time cracking the scoreboard Thursday night plating two runs off Carlton in the bottom of the first. Josh Delph (Bartow, Fla.) led things off with an infield single to short and scored two batters later on a triple down the line in right by West. Hank Truluck (Ocala, Fla.) then laid down a sac-bunt to score West to give the Gold team a 2-0 lead.

Team Gold pushed its lead to 4-0 with another two runs in the second. Kelly and Owens opened the inning with a double and single, respectively, but Kelly would score on a fielding error in left. DeLuzio would pick up a two-out RBI with a double to left to plate Owens.

In the fifth, Gold added two more runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Bret Maxwell (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led off the inning with a single to right center and moved to second on a one out walk to DeLuzio. Both runners would score a batter later on a double down the line in left off the bat of West.

Gold plated the final run of the game in the seventh when Kelly and Owens opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Kelly would score from third a batter later as Maxwell grounded into a double play.

The Garnet pitchers allowed just one runner to get past first base on Thursday night. Busby was that hitter as he reached on an infield single to start the second and then stole second.

The fall season will come to a close on Monday, October 20 when Florida State will host the Ontario Blue Jays at 3:00 p.m. FSU will begin batting practice at 1:30 p.m. Admission to the game is free of charge.
