Gold Sweeps Garnet in Preseason Scrimmage

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Despite the rotating lineups, the Gold team stayed dominant to sweep the Garnet team through seven sets in the annual Garnet vs. Gold match, held Saturday afternoon (Aug. 19) at Tully Gym.

With a relatively young team, and only one week left before the start of the season, the Garnet vs. Gold match gave head coach Chris Poole a chance to try out potential lineups. After losing four starters from the 2016 season and gaining seven new players in 2017, the newcomers and freshmen will be used to fill in the gaps.

The newcomers impressed in their Florida State debut, as freshman right side hitter Mariah Brim led both teams in assisted blocks, and freshman middle blocker Taryn Knuth had one of the highest numbers of total attacks across both teams.

The 2017 indoor season kicks off next weekend as the Noles head to Waco, Texas for the Hampton Inn & Suites Waco North Baylor Invitational. They’ll face Baylor, Illinois State and UC Santa Barbara in the tournament which runs August 25-26.

The team’s home opener will feature matches against UNC Asheville, Colorado State and TCU as a part of the annual Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational on September 1-3. Admission to all regular season home matches is free, but fans will also have the chance to stream all three matches through ACC Network Extra.

Quoting head coach Chris Poole

On what he thought of the rotating lineups…

“I’m very encouraged by what I saw today. With each of the sets we were able to try all different lineups, and everyone stepped up and did well in all of them.

On what he thought of the efficiency on the court…

“We made some mistakes as we assumed we would, but we actually didn’t make as many as I feared we might with having so much youth on the court. Overall the young players did some really great things, so that was nice to see. I felt like our upperclassmen did a really nice job of leadership on the court and controlling the play when they needed to.

“There’s things we want to work on offensively to be more efficient, and defensively we were not digging as well as I was hoping we would. But I’m encouraged by what I saw today.”

On his confidence in choosing the starting lineup…

I think we were able to put some pieces of the puzzle together, so this helped because we literally used seven different lineups today. I felt like there were a couple particular spots that lined up for us really well.”
