ATHENS, Ga. – Six members of the Florida State women’s tennis team begin competition in the main draw of the ITA Southeast Regional on Friday. There will be five Noles competing in singles along with three doubles teams. Sophomore Gabby Goldin advanced from the qualifying draw to join her four other teammates in the singles main draw.
“I was very happy to see Gabby qualify through today and into the main draw,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde.
Goldin and freshman Lucie Prochazkova began play in the second round of the ITA Southeast Regional qualifying bracket Thursday afternoon after both received a bye in the first round.
Goldin fell behind early after losing the first set 6-2 to Charlotte van Diemen of Georgia Southern. Goldin came back to win the second set 6-2 and finished of van Diemen with a 6-3 third set victory.
“Gabby did a good job,” said Hyde “She got down early, but found her footing after losing the first set. She took care of business like she needed to.”
Freshman Lucie Prochazkova got off to a slow start as well, losing the first set 6-4. She rebounded and took the second set 6-2, but fell to Marie Mottet of Mercer 6-2 in the third set.
Goldin joins junior Ariana Rahmanparast, sophomores Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia, and freshman Petra Hule in the singles main draw starting tomorrow after doubles play beginning at 9 a.m. The Seminole pairs of Garcia/Hule, Goldin/Prochazkova and Rahmanparast/Das all qualified for the doubles main draw.
“We have some great match-ups for tomorrow in the first round of the main draw,” said Hyde “We have some great opportunities for everyone in singles and doubles. This is one of the toughest if not the toughest region in the country and every match we play tomorrow is another opportunity for us to prove some things and keep the development processes moving forward. I cannot wait to get on the court tomorrow.”
Play on Friday will consist of the round of 32 in doubles play followed by the round of 64 and 32 in singles play.
The two regional finalists will earn an automatic bid into the Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships in Indian Wells, Calif. on Nov. 1-5.
