Golf’s Jansson Into 6th

NEW ORLEANS, La. (seminoles.com) –
Junior Malin Jansson shot an even par score of 72 and is in sixth place in the individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team is in 11th place in the team standings after two rounds of the AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at the English Turn Golf and Country Club. Jansson begins play in the third and final round on Wednesday only nine strokes out of the lead and only one stroke from earning the first top five finish of her Florida State career.

No. 4 Southern California leads a star studded field of 10 top 25 ranked teams after 36 of 54 holes have been played. The Trojans hold a five stroke lead over No. 13 Duke – one of two ACC teams playing in the event along with the Seminoles. Southern Cal has carded the best two single round team tournament scores of the event. Cassy Isagawa of Oregon holds a six stroke lead over Lisa McCloskey of Southern California in the race for the individual title.

Jansson (Nykvarm, Sweden) continued her near perfect play in the second round as she carded 16 holes at par or better with two birdies in finishing at even par for the round. She was minus two strokes under par over her first 11 holes in rounds to and finished with a 72 – one stroke better than her score of 73 in the first round. Jansson was below par for 11 of the 18 holes she played in round two.

Jansson has been as low as two strokes under par and has never been more than two strokes over par in the first two rounds of the event. She has played 32 of her 36 holes at par or better with three birdies.

Junior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) also played even par golf for the Seminoles in the second round as she shot an even par score of 72. She was nine strokes better in her second round as compared to her first round score of 81 as she carded four birdies in round two (as compared to zero in the first round) and earned 14 holes at par or better (as compared to 12 in the first round).

Negron moved up from a tie for 69th place after the first round into a tie for 43rd place after the second round.

Freshman Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) is Florida State’s second leading golfer with a two day total of 152. She carded a two over par score of 74 in the first round and has carded a team leading seven birdies in the first two rounds of the tournament.

“Malin and Jess did a phenomenal job despite the weather which made play difficult at times,” said head coach Amy Bond. “I am confident that we can finish this tournament strong and jump up in the standings. I continue to be encouraged by the women on this team with every round we play.”

Florida State will play with Tulane (the host school) and Alabama in Wednesday’s third and final round.
