TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A day after combining for a 7-1 record at the 2014 USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals, the Seminoles went 3-4 on Saturday behind the play of No. 103-ranked Cristian Gonzalez Mendez.
Gonzalez Mendez went 2-0 in singles action, taking down Francesc Aulina of UCF in the second round, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-3. The victory moved the Seminole senior into the third round also held Saturday, when he defeated Andres Alfonzo of Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1, 6-2. Gonzalez Mendez is the last remaining Seminole in action after Benjamin Lock, Jose Gracia, and Marco Nunez all fell on Saturday.
Lock, the No. 79 player in the country and the No. 8 seed in the tournament, won his second round match against Justin Roberts of USF, 6-3, 6-4. In the third round, Lock fell in straight sets to No. 100 Maxx Lipman of Florida, 6-2, 6-2.
In his only match of the day, Gracia was tripped up by 9-16 seed Jack Findel-Hawkins of North Florida, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Nunez went down against Carlos Benito of Georgia Tech, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3.
In doubles play, the No. 1 seed of Lock and Nunez lost to Georgia’s Eric Diaz and Austin Smith, 8-4.
