Goodman Places Eighth at World Championship Trials

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  Rising senior Kelsey Goodman placed eighth in the finals of the women’s 1-meter springboard with a total of 476.00 after 10 dives at the USA Diving World Championship Trials at the Morcom Aquatics Center.

Goodman qualified for finals by placing eighth in the semifinals with a score of234.00 after five dives, edging out Olivia ball on her last dive for the spot.

“Getting the chance to compete in finals was great,” Goodman said. “That’s the way I look at it. Usually after I have an event under my belt, my next day is even better. So, I’m excited for 3-meter.”

The Moultrie, Ga. native will compete in the quarterfinals of the women’s 3-meter on Friday at 10 a.m.

Winning the event with a score of 537.00 was Samantha Pickens from the Tucson Diving Team. A native of Murrysville, Pa., Pickens was the 2013 NCAA 1-meter champion for the University of Arizona. University of Iowa alumni Deirdre Freeman placed second with a total of 532.90.  Both ladies will represent the United States at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

In the men’s 1-meter competition, Olympic bronze medalist Kristian Ipsen took home the title with a score of 835.60, while Harrison Jones came in second with a total of 784.15. Both men were selected to the World Championships team.

Thursday’s events will kick-off at 10 a.m. with the men’s 3-meter quarterfinal followed by the women’s 10-meter quarterfinal.  Ipsen and Troy Dumais will highight the men’s competition as the pair won bronze at the 2012 Olympic Game in the 3-meter synchronized event. Both men’s and women’s semifinals will concluded the session.  

Incoming freshman Dominic Giordano will be representing Pitt Aquatic Club Divers and compete in the men’s platform. Hailing from Wexford, Pa., the PIAA state record holder has qualified to compete on platform where he will look to improve on his 10th place finish from the 2012 U.S. Summer Nationals.  He will dive the quarterfinals of the 10-meter, which is slated for Friday.

Tickets are sold daily at $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children or weekly passes can be purchased for $20.00.
