Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Cary, N.C. to compete in the 2003 Great American Cross Country Festival on Friday, September 26. The featured event is the Nike Race of Champions, which begins at 4:15 for women and 4:40 for the men.
In all, 37 nationally ranked teams, 18 from the college division, will participate in the race including 13 high school teams competing for championship titles. The ranked teams include No. 1 Brigham Young, No. 9 Columbia, No. 10 Northern Arizona, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 14 North Carolina State, No. 16 Duke, No. 20 Virginia, No. 25 William and Mary and No. 28 West Virginia on the women’s side and No. 5 Northern Arizona, No. 7 Michigan, No. 8 Central Michigan, No. 10 Villanova, No. 14 North Carolina, No. 15 William and Mary, No. 22 Butler and No. 26 Ohio State for the men.
The Garnet and Gold men’s squad started the season with two consecutive first place finishes after participating in the Mountaineer Open and the Florida Intercollegiate Championships. The women’s team placed second at the Mountaineer Open and took first place in the Florida Intercollegiate Championships.
At the 2002 Great American Cross Country, the men’s squad finished 12th while the women placed 13th. Former Nole Vicky Gill finished 5th overall running the 5000m course in 18:17 while then sophomore Joep Tigchelaar led the men in the 8000m event in a time of 27:48.3 with a 57th place finish. Current FSU leader sophomore Kevin Cook posted a time of 28:01.4 finish good for 70th place. Seminole junior Ann Clinton placed 67th overall with a time of 19:49.9.
