Austin, Tex. – The second day (Friday, April 7, 2006) of competition for the Florida State track and field team wrapped up at the 2006 Texas Relays on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.
Senior Johnta Griffin (Orlando, Fla./Florida A&M) jumped a career-best 24’6.5″ (7.48m) to round out the top five. He joins the list of NCAA East Region qualifiers. It is the top mark in the conference and places him among the top 15 jumpers in the country. Griffin also jumped 48’1.75″ (14.57m) in the triple jump.
Classmate Rafeeq Curry (Miami, Fla./ACE Academy) also regionally qualified, hitting the sand at 24’6.25″ (7.47m), good for sixth place. In his first full season competing in the event, it is his farthest mark and places him behind Griffin in the conference listing.
The men’s 4x400m improved their season-best time, running 3:08.66. Comprised of leadoff leg freshman Tywayne Buchanan (Greater Portmore, Jamaica/Wolmer’s Boys’ School), second quarter miler sophomore Hubert Mitchell (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Lakes Community HS), redshirt freshman Javier Garcia-Tunon (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) and anchor leg sophomore Elliott Wood (Sydney, Australia/Narrabean Sports Academy.
Both women’s relays entered the meet with entries into the NCAA regional meet but looking to record speedier seed times.
Running later on that day, the women’s 4x400m shaved five seconds off its regional standard time, crossing the line in 3:34.58 and just one spot out of qualifying for the finals. Twin sisters Alyce and Alycia Williams (Palm Coast, Fla./George Mason) ran the first two legs, handing off to sophomore Kandia Batchelor (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough) who exchanged with anchor leg senior All-American captain Evelyne-Cynthia Niako (Stone Mountain, Ga./Stephenson).
The women’s 4x100m opened the day with a season-best 45.30. The group (Alyce Williams, Evelyne-Cynthia Niako, Alycia Williams and LaKendra McColumn) bettered their regional qualifying mark and the third fastest time in the league in finishing in 13th place among the elite group.
Redshirt junior Garrett Johnson (Tampa, Fla/Tampa Baptist Academy) continued to improve on his discus performance, improving his regional qualifying entry mark with a 186’4″ (56.79m) for a sixth-place performance.
NCAA East Regional qualifier freshman Tori Allen finished in a tie for eighth place in the pole vault, vaulting 11’11.75″ (3.65m). Junior Lindsey Nelson threw 45’5.25″ (13.85m) in shot put.
Competing individually in the 100m, Alyce Williams clocked a time of 12.04, crossing the tape fifth in her heat. Hurdler LaKendra McColumn (Lithonia, Ga./Southwest Dekalb) sprinted through the 100m hurdles heat for the third fastest mark of her group at 14.05.
Redshirt junior John Fallone (Rochester, N.Y./Virginia Tech) threw 53′ (16.15m) in taking 12th place in the shot put.
