Gumm Leads Seminoles At Schooner Fall Classic

Sophomore Lydia Gumm tied her career best with an even par score of 70 and is in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings, and the Florida State women’s golf team is in 12th place in the team standings with one round remaining in the 2nd Annual Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club.  Gumm tied her career low for a single round score and is in contention to earn her third consecutive top 20 finish.

Mississippi State maintained its first place standing on the team leaderboard as the Lady Bulldogs finished with the second best team total of the second round.  The Lady Bulldogs increased their lead from five strokes over SMU after the first round of play to 11 strokes over Kent State after the second round.  Ally McDonald of Mississippi State holds the individual lead with a 36-hole total of 134.  She holds a one-stroke lead over teammate Jessica Peng and Hayley Davis of Baylor.

Florida State begins play in Monday’s third and final round of the event looking to move into the top-10 in the team standings.  The Seminoles are six strokes behind Baylor as the Lady Bears currently sit in 10th place.

Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) continued her stellar play during the fall season as she tied her career best with her even par score of 70.  It marked the second time in her last seven rounds and second time this fall that she had carded a 70.  She also carded a 70 in the second round of the season-opening Mo Morial Invitational.  Gumm is averaging a career-low 73.29 strokes in eight rounds during three tournaments this fall.

Gumm was very consistent in Sunday’s second round with two birdies and 16 holes played at par or better.  Starting her day on hole No. 10, she played her best golf on her final 12 holes of the round as she was two-under par with two birdies.  Gumm was never more than two strokes over par during the round and played half of the round at even par.

Sophomore All-American Matilda Castren (Espoo, Finland) played her best round of the season as she carded a 2-under par score of 68.  She improved her single round score from the first round by nine strokes and looks to be rounding into the form that made her one of the nation’s top collegiate golfers during her freshman season as a Seminole.

Castren led the Seminoles with four birdies as she earned her first under par round of the fall season.  She entered the day averaging more than 75 strokes per round in her first five rounds of the fall and cut more than seven strokes from her average score.  Castren was never above par and was as many as three strokes under par during the round.  She has seven birdies in the first two rounds of the tournament to lead Florida State.

Freshman Morgane Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded the best score of her Seminole career as she finished with a 1-over par score of 71.  Playing as an individual, she has a total of 143 and is in a tie for 29th place in the individual standings.   She carded a 72 in the first round and is the second ranked Seminole in her first event for Florida State.

Senior Alex Milan (Lutz, Fla.) and Kim Metraux (Lausanne, Switzerland) carded identical scores of 74 and are tied for 36th and tied for 65th, respectively, with 36-hole totals of 144 and 148.  Milan will look to improve her standing in the third round in order to earn her third consecutive top-25 individual finish.

Florida State will play with Texas Tech and Baylor for the second consecutive round as all three tee off from hole No. 10 at 9:30 a.m. ET.
