TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the third time this season, sophomore left-hander Tyler Holton has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon. The Tallahassee native allowed no hits and struck out eight in seven innings against No. 8 North Carolina on Saturday.
The Tar Heels had four runners reach base in the first seven innings – all on errors – but none of the runners reached second base. Holton exited the game after 109 pitches, but tied his career high with seven innings pitched.
For the season, Holton ranks in the top 20 nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (3rd, 4.29), strikeouts (14th, 58) and WHIP (10th, 0.74). He is 4-0 on the season with a 1.93 earned run average.
Holton previously won ACC Pitcher of the Week honors this season after games against Samford (2/25) and Oakland (3/4). Against Samford, Holton set a career high with 11 strikeouts, and broke that record against Oakland with 13. He became the first player to earn ACC Player of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks since Maryland’s Jake Stinnett in 2014.
Holton joins Paul Wilson (1993 and 1994), Mike Ziegler (2000), and Sean Gilmartin (2011) as the only players in FSU history with three ACC Pitcher of the Week honors in one season.
