TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior lefthander Tyler Holton and sophomore third baseman Drew Mendoza were named preseason All-Americans by D1Baseball.com Tuesday morning. Holton is one of five first-team pitchers, while Mendoza is on the second team.
Holton, from Tallahassee, was previously named a first-team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball and a second-team selection of Perfect Game. He enters 2018 after a standout sophomore season, finishing with a 10-3 record, 2.34 earned run average and 144 strikeouts in 119.1 innings pitched. Holton is expected to lead a deep Seminole pitching staff that returns all three weekend starters from a College World Series team in 2017.
Holton was a first-team All-American and All-ACC performer in 2017.
Mendoza missed the first 26 games of his freshman season in 2017 due to injuries, but still finished with a .270 batting average and nine home runs. His two home runs in the ACC Championship Game against No. 2 North Carolina helped propel FSU to its seventh ACC Championship. He was FSU’s primary first baseman after returning last season and will switch corners in 2018. Mendoza was the highest-rated player in the 2016 class to attend college a year ago.
Catcher Cal Raleigh (second team, Collegiate Baseball) and outfielder Jackson Lueck (third team, Perfect Game) have also been recognized as preseason All-Americans entering this season.
Florida State, a consensus top five team to begin the year, opens practice January 26 and the season begins three weeks later, on February 16, 2018, at home against Xavier.
