Athens, Ga. – The NCAA Zone B Championships concluded with freshman Terry Horner (Orlando, Fla.) earning a ticket to the 2007 NCAA Men’s Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships. In the platform diving competition, two Seminoles placed in the top ten.
Sophomore Dan Frebel (Fort Wayne, Ind.) bettered his 10th place finish at the 2006 Zone Championships by claiming third place. In the preliminary round, he bested Luis Gagnet’s 2003 school record with a score of 391.75 . He added 343.75 points in the finals to post a score of 735.00. Ironically, Frebel’s score in the finals was the same as Gagnet’s record.
Freshman Katie Sirounis (Inner Harbor Beach, Fla.) was the top female finisher for Florida State. She finished eighth with a ten-dive total of 494.95. Freshman Aleia Monden (Mililiani, Hawaii) captured the 11th place with a ten-dive total of 469.30. It was the highest finish for each diver at the zone championships.
Junior Alex Tilbrook (Largo, Fla.) earned his highest finish at NCAA Zone Championships with an 11th place showing on the platform. Tilbrook scored 575.30, only 45.5 points and three positions shy of making the trip to nationals. Horner finished in 20th place in platform diving with a score of 437.55 points. On the first two days he won both the one and three meter diving events.
The NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships kick off March eighth and will conclude on the tenth. The men’s championships run March 15-17. The meet is being held at the University Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Seminoles.com will have complete coverage both the men’s and women’s championships.
