TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
It appears the momentum the Florida State softball team had at the end of last season has carried over into this year. The No. 25 Seminoles won their fourth game in a row to start 2007 as they defeated Samford 8-0 in six innings on Saturday (Feb. 10) to win the title of the Seminole Classic.

Florida State starts the year at 4-0 for the first time since 2004 and just the 13th time in school history. The loss evened the Bulldogs’ record at 2-2.

Picking up her second victory of the weekend was hurler Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) as she starts the year at 2-0. The right-hander worked a complete game, giving up no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. McDonald threw three perfect innings to start the game, giving her 10 innings of no-hit ball dating back to Friday night’s no-hitter against Florida A&M. Taking the loss for Samford was Stephanie Royall as her record fell to 2-1.

Leading the way for the Seminoles offensively was tournament MVP and Player of the Year candidate Veronica Wootson (Fontana, Calif.) as she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Tying her for the team lead with a pair of RBIs was right fielder LaShaun Davis (Marietta, Ga.).

With two outs in the second inning, the Seminoles jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Third baseman Michelle Snyder (Wenatchee, Wash.) drew a walk then Wootson looped a single into left field. Davis drilled a shot to the gap in left field to score Wootson and Snyder but was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple.

Wootson produced two more runs for Florida State in the bottom of the fourth. First baseman Brittany Osmon (San Diego, Calif.) started the frame by getting hit by a pitch then center fielder Whitney Buckmon (Stone Mountain, Ga.) roped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Wootson drilled a single off the Samford third baseman that allowed both runners to score.

The scoring continued that inning as Davis followed with a double to center field to score Wootson from second. Catcher Robin Ahrberg (Stillwater, Okla.) dropped a single into right field to put runners on the corners then shortstop Yuruby Alicart (Maracay, Venezuela) drilled a single up the middle to plate Davis.

Capping the scoring in the bottom of the sixth was rookie right fielder Monica Montez (Corona, Calif.) as blasted a two-run home run to score her and Wootson and end game early.

The Seminoles take to the road for their first games away from JoAnne Graf Field as they take on Georgia Southern on Tuesday (Feb. 13) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
