COLUMBUS, Ga. – NFCA All-American senior pitcher Casey Hunter fired a one-hit shutout for No. 21 Florida State in a Gold Medal Bracket game at the 10th Annual NFCA Leadoff Classic Saturday night. The Seminoles played error-free ball and defeated No. 25 Fresno State, 2-0, to improve to 10-6 on the season. The Bulldogs, who had eased through pool play with a 3-0 record, dropped to 4-2 on the season. NFCA All-American pitcher Jamie Southern (3-1) got the loss for Fresno State.
Florida State joins just four teams of 24 teams that are contenders for the championship: No. 8 Michigan, No. 13 Oklahoma, and No. 16 Georgia. FSU will square off with the Wolverines Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Live stats and audio are available.
Hunter pitched her third straight game and the only hit allowed was logged in the top of the fifth when a soft grounder reached the gap up the middle.
Florida State’s big inning came in the bottom of the fourth with one out. Freshman catcher Melissa Wood reached base safely when Fresno State earned one of its five total errors in the game on a dropped ball on the tag by the first baseman. With pinch runner junior Carey Galuppi coming in to run, second baseman and NFCA All-American Veronica Wootson singled up the middle to put runners at first and second. Designated player Carly Brieske tallied a hit to center field and load the bases for the Tribe. Sophomore right fielder LaShaun Davis went down swinging and left fielder Natasha Jacob walked up to plate with two outs. Jacob, who leads the Seminoles in batting, hit a shot down the right field line to give FSU a 2-0 lead it would hang on to for three innings.
Jacob was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, while senior shortstop Tatiana George extended her hit streak to five games with a single.
Defensively, scrappy senior third baseman Lesley Palmer did it all for FSU on the field. She had a team-high four assists and two putouts, including an outstanding line drive catch.
