Indoor Season Starts Friday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The nationally-ranked Florida State men’s and women’s track teams will kick off the 2011 indoor season Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

FSU (men No. 6/women no. 14) will compete against teams from UNC-Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, High Point, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, South Carolina and ACC foes NC State, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Like the Seminoles, the Hokies (men No. 4), Tigers (women No. 7), Gamecocks (women No. 19) and Tar Heels (men No. 20) are all ranked in the preseason USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Team Computer Ranking.

The action gets started Friday with the men’s and women’s triple jump, women’s pole vault, men’s weight throw and women’s 60-meter dash all starting at 5 p.m.

Saturday’s events get started at 11 a.m. with the men’s high jump and the women’s poll vault.

“It’s the first meet of the year and we are looking forward to seeing some different teams after a long fall season of practice,” FSU associate head coach Harlis Meaders said. “Both men’s and women’s teams will see All-Americans returning to competition. The women will see Teona Rodgers, Danielle Jeffery, Allyn Laughlin and others while the men will put Brandon Byram, Maurice Mitchell, Brian Chibudu, Michael Putman, Gonzalo Barriolhet and others on the track.”

As mentioned by Coach Meaders, the Seminoles boast quite the travel party.

In addition to the afore mentioned student-athletes, a group of new ‘Noles will also head to Blacksburg, Va. looking to make their early mark.

“It’s great to have such a talented to group of experienced athletes in uniform and we are anxious to see the newcomers in their first competition for FSU,” Meaders said. “Termaine Grant, Kemar and Maxwell Hyman, Miles Sparks and Ronald Bolden will also be there for the men. Elizabeth Ichite, Chelsea Whalen, Bianca Smith are the others competing for the women’s team.

“All of these young ‘Noles are talented are we are looking forward to watching them develop during the upcoming season.”
