Instant Analysis: Giorgio Newberry switches to TE

Jimbo Fisher confirmed moments ago that Florida State's depth at tight end will be two players deeper than originally expected.

Giorgio Newberry and Shayne Broxsie are both on the move to tight end in time for the start of fall camp Tuesday afternoon.

Newberry is entering his redshirt sophomore year and was expected to be in the rotation -- if not pushing for a starting job -- at defensive end. A standout pass rusher and offensive linemen in high school, Newberry redshirted his first year in Tallahassee and then posted 13 tackles in 13 games a season ago behind future NFL players Bjoern Werner, Brandon Jenkins and Tank Carradine.

Newberry's move isn't all that surprising, considering he has blocking experience and 6-foot-6, 280-pound frame that could be beneficial to a tight end corps that lost Kevin Haplea (season-ending injury) and Christo Kourtzidis (transfer) and would have entered camp with just two scholarship players (Nick O'Leary and freshman Jeremy Kerr). There will be a definitive learning curve for Newberry, but because of the depth concerns he is automatically in the rotation in some capacity.

The fallout from Newberry's move is that FSU is now down a quality young player at defensive end where the Werner-Jenkins-Carradine trio has left quite the void. Without Newberry, FSU enters camp with expected starters Mario Edwards, Jr. and Dan Hicks as well as Chris Casher, Desmond Hollin, DeMarcus Walker and Davarez Bryant.

In Broxsie, new tight ends coach Tim Brewster is getting a hard-working former walk-on that has appeared in nine games in his career and was utilized some last year as a goal-line blocker. Broxsie was awarded a scholarship this off-season and had moved from the defensive line to fullback behind Chad Abram. Broxsie could still likely see snaps in the backfield as well.

Fisher also confirmed Monday that offensive linemen Trey Pettis has elected to transfer and Daniel Foose has been medically disqualified.
