COSTA MASNAGA, Italy – The Florida State women’s basketball team wrapped up its Foreign Tour adventure on Thursday night with hard-fought 81-76 victory over German professional team, Chemcats Chemnitz, to complete a two-game sweep in Italy.
Freshman forward Ivey Slaughter was dominant, scoring 27 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. The Macon, Ga., native was the key to staving off a Chemcats’ comeback in the fourth quarter, grabbing timely offensive rebounds and nailing layups and jumpers in the post.
Redshirt junior forward Lauren Coleman added a double-double of her own with 10 points and 13 boards, while sophomore guard/forward Morgan Jones totaled 16 points and seven assists and freshman center Kai James scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards. Senior point guard Cheetah Delgado dished five assists and freshman guard Brittany Brown had nine points.
With Delgado pushing the pace and FSU making defensive stops, the Seminoles jumped out to a 20-3 lead against their professional opponents. In the second quarter, Chemcats fought back, but FSU still took a 41-29 lead into halftime after Brown flicked a behind-the-back pass to Jones for a layup in the last minute of the second quarter.
Chemcats refused to go away and chipped away at the lead in the second half. Slaughter always had an answer, however. She scored six straight points late in the third quarter and made an “And-1” putback to seal the win after Chemcats cut its deficit to 5 with three minutes left in the game.
The tour-wrapping victory wasn’t the only fun the Seminoles had on Thursday either. FSU started its day by taking the Como-Brunate funicular into the Prealps mountains above Lake Como before traveling 45 minutes for zip-lining and modified-bobsled rides high up in the mountains of Switzerland.
Thursday provided plenty of fun as the final day of FSU’s incredible 10-day adventure. The team begins its journey home Friday morning with a flight in Milan, Italy at 9:25 a.m. The Noles will arrive back in the states later that afternoon with two straight wins under their belts, countless souvenirs and memories that will last a lifetime.
Senior point guard Cheetah Delgado reflected on the trip and the win with Seminoles.com late Thursday night.
Cheetah Delgado, Senior Point Guard
We really grew as a team on and off the court on this trip to Senegal and Italy. We learned a lot about each other. We know what we need to work on now, and we made better relationships with each other. We spent 10 days together, so we really had no choice but to grow closer. It was a great experience, and hopefully we carry this with us when we get back.
Tonight we did everything well early on. We were playing great defense and really pushing the ball in transition. We really crashed the boards and that led to some easy buckets. Later in the game, we got tired … but we fought through it. We still maintained a high energy level. We tried not to think about our fatigue.
Ivey (Slaughter) is a hyped-up player. She does everything right. She goes after every ball and crashes the boards every time. She is always in the right position.
LC (Lauren Coleman) knows what her role is and she is a great rebounder and great at knocking down jumpers. She had a great game for us tonight, too.
The German team tonight came back. They were able to get transition points. It was a good test for us. We were able to hold on and that will make us better.
Today was a blast. I’ve been wanting to zip line for awhile. At first, everybody was really nervous, but once we got on it was all fun. We had to hike up a mountain and then climbed up a stand. We were high up in the mountains and could see the view down below and the drop of the zip line. When we got on it, it was all smiles. Everybody enjoyed it.
We also went on a bobsled ride. I was telling LC that they need to bring some of those down to the States. It was pretty fun. It was like a rollercoaster. It was a lot of excitement.
We are looking forward to coming home, but we all had a ton of fun.
