TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- Florida State men’s tennis team advanced in the doubles draw and wrapped up the singles draw of the Tallahassee Futures Tournament presented by Visit Tallahassee at the Indoor Tennis Facility on Thursday.
The doubles pair of sophomore Aziz Dougaz and junior Guy Iradukunda defeated No. 1 seed Hans Hach Verdugo (MEX) and Kaichi Uchida (JPN) 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semifinal round.
“I thought they looked dominant throughout the match,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “Aziz was all over the net, and Guy as usual was returning up a storm.”
The Seminole pair never trailed and only lost one serve in the entire match for the dominant win. They will play again at 2:30 p.m. in the seminfinals against Tim Kopinski/Alex Lawson.
In the singles draw, Iradukunda faced the two seed Tim Van Rijthoven (NED) Thursday morning. Iradukunda played a tough match but fell 7-5, 6-3.
Iradukunda earned a significant win over Ryan Shane (USA) 7-6(3), 6-3 to advance on Wednesday. Shane was the 2015 NCAA champion and a four-time All-American at Virginia, and last week won the $25k Waco Futures. He is ranked 611 in the ATP singles standings.
Redshirt junior Lucas Poullain came back from down match point to win long three-set match late Wednesday night, but could not get past Wil Spencer (USA) on Thursday, falling 6-1, 6-0.
With the loss, the FSU men have completed competition in the singles draw, but not before earning impressive ATP wins.
“Any win in this tournament is a good win,” Hultquist said. “Of this series, this may be the strongest field they’ve had all year.
“I’m really proud of our guys and the results that they’ve gotten and for the rest of the matches that they’ve won so far.”
There will be spectator seating on courts two and four for the main draws.
The finals will take place on December 10 (doubles) and December 11 (singles). All matches will be played at the Indoor Tennis Facility at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd., Tallahassee, Fla., 32310. The event is free to fans.
