TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Back when gas cost $0.36 … back when a dozen eggs cost $0.62 … back when a loaf of bread cost $0.25 … back in the day of Atari, eight-track tape players and black and white television sets … When was that you might ask? The 1970’s – the era of bell-bottom jeans, the rise of disco and really, really big hair – the Golden Era as it is known. Jam with Ham – Florida State’s annual tip-off event for the highly anticipated 2016-17 basketball season — takes a step back to the Good Ol’ Days of the 1970’s on Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
As the event returns to Tully Gym on the Florida State campus. Tully Gym was home to the Seminoles’ 1972 NCAA Tournament Finalists, the greatest player in school history (Dave Cowens) and legendary head Hugh Durham who will be inducted in the College Basketball Hall of Fame this coming November.
The current Seminoles – led by superstars Dwayne Bacon, Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Jonathan Isaac – will Throw It Back for one amazing night of high flying dunks, 3-point shots and Golden Era fun as they ramp up their preparations for what is sure to be a Golden Year in the history of the program. The Seminoles are ranked among the nation’s top 25 in every pre-season poll and are predicted to finish among the top teams in the ACC – the most competitive collection of teams in college basketball history.
As part of the event, Coach Hamilton is bringing back his best 1970’s clothing and will cruise Tallahassee throughout the week in a vintage 1970’s era muscle car. Fans are encouraged to share their favorite pictures and memories from their everyday life in the 1970’s through social media @fsuhoops.
“We are looking to our fans in attendance wear their most colorful 70’s attire,” said Hamilton. “The best looking outfits are going to include sunglasses, ties and a lot of color. We are going to have a great DJ spinning disco songs and a mirror ball to make the basketball court look and feel like a dance floor. We encourage our great fans to be creative because our judges will not only score the dunk contest but they will present prizes to the best dressed fans.”
In addition to the incredible display of basketball, this year’s Jam with Ham will feature a dance floor with a disco contest and prizes for the best 1970’s era clothing ensembles. For both the guys and girls at the event, a Big Hair contest will be held with the winners earning the chance to compete with the Seminoles on the court on the dink and 3-point shooting contests.
Truck on over to Tully Gym on October 7 at 7:00 p.m. and plan to Get Down at the Hippest Throw Back Gym in the country.
