FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y.– Florida State junior Jean-Yves Aubone lost in the second round of U.S. Open qualifying Thursday afternoon in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Aubone was defeated by Germany’s Bjorn Phau in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
In the first set, Aubone struggled to hold serve against the world’s 136th-ranked player, getting broken in the third game of the set to go down 3-1. He was broken a second time at 4-2 and Phau was able to win the next game to take the first set. The Seminole junior was able to rebound in the second set to hold serve easily and the two players traded games until 4-4 when Phau broke Aubone for the only time in the set to take a 5-4 lead. Phau then served the match out to advance.
Aubone was the only collegiate American to advance to the second round of qualifying.
