TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Helping the Seminoles extend their winning streak to an NCAA-leading 18 games over the weekend, redshirt junior pitcher Jessica Burroughs was named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday. It is the third time in 2016 that Burroughs has been honored by the ACC and she shared the weekly award with Louisville’s Maryssa Becker.
“Jessica has been working so hard and it is great to see her have this success,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “As a staff, each pitcher helps drive the others to get better and improve and they are all in it together. She pitched very well against a scrappy Syracuse team over the weekend and it is fun seeing her compete and attack the hitters and trust in her pitches and defense.”
Burroughs was superb in helping the Seminoles to a sweep of Syracuse on March 19-20. In a pair of complete-game victories, the redshirt junior pitcher posted a 2-0 record, 0.50 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 14 innings. Burroughs tossed a season-high 11 strikeouts on Saturday against the Orange, allowing just five batters to reach base for the entire game.
Closing out the series on Sunday, Burroughs struck out the side in the second and fifth innings on her way to 10 punchouts and a complete-game shutout as Syracuse did not have a runner reach third base for the entire game.
Burroughs has now won 10 games in a row and improved to 13-2 on the season with a 1.21 ERA as batters are hitting just .153 against her on the year. She ranks in the top 30 in the NCAA in six different statistical categories, including placing sixth nationally in victories.
