TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the second time this season and the sixth time in her career, redshirt senior Jessica Burroughs has been selected as the ACC Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Burroughs was nearly perfect over the weekend with a pair of complete-game one-hitters against Georgia Tech as Florida State opened ACC play with a sweep of the Yellow Jackets. On March 3, the Warner Robins, Ga., native tied a career high with 14 strikeouts, and allowed just three batters to reach base on a single and two walks.
The only blemish on her record on March 5 was an infield single in the fourth as she struck out six over five innings. She opened the game on Sunday with three strikeouts in the first inning, marking the fifth time this season – and her fourth start in a row – that Burroughs had struck out the side in the first inning.
For the weekend, only one runner even reached second base as Burroughs faced just four batters over the minimum in her 12.0 innings of work. Overall, the redshirt senior limited Georgia Tech to a .054 batting average as she allowed just two hits and recorded 20 strikeouts in her two games in the circle.
On the year, Burroughs holds a 9-1 record with 80 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .123 batting average, leading the ACC in all three categories. She has allowed just seven earned runs in her 57.0 innings this season, and her 0.86 ERA is second in the conference, trailing only the 0.73 ERA by her teammate Meghan King.
Burroughs ranks in the top 25 nationally in hits allowed per seven innings (2.95 – 10th), victories (9 – 14th), strikeouts (80 – 18th) and strikeouts per seven innings (9.8 – 22nd).
