TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State sophomore infielder Sherman Johnson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Danny Hultzen earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Johnson drove in a team-high 10 runs while going 5-for-8 with five runs scored as FSU swept a three-game series from Hofstra to remain undefeated on the year. The Tampa, Fla., native, who started at both second and third over the weekend, tied a career-high with three hits while establishing a career-high six RBI in game one of the series. Johnson finished a triple short of hitting for the cycle in the first game against the Pride connecting on a single in the fourth, a three-run home run in the sixth and a double in the seventh.
His six RBI performance was the first by a Seminole hitter since Mike McGee drove in six runs in a 15-6 victory over Wake Forest on April 24, 2009.
Johnson connected on his second home run in as many games in game two, taking a 1-1 offering from Hofstra’s Kevin Rigopoulos deep over the fence in right in the third inning for a two-run shot and his second home run of the season. A sac-fly in the fifth put the finishing touches on a nine-RBI afternoon.
Johnson broke a 2-2 tie in Sunday’s series finale, singling home the go-ahead run with the bases loaded in the third for his 10th RBI in three games. With two home runs over the weekend, Johnson surpassed his career total (1) as a freshman in 2009. Johnson has yet to strike out in 29 plate appearances this year.
Johnson and the Seminoles return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 2 as FSU plays Florida on Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., as part of the Florida Four Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., while the game will air nationally on CSS.
Florida State will then head to Clearwater, Fla., to face the reigning National League champion Philadelphia Phillies in an exhibition game on Wednesday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Bright House Field.
