Jones Leads Seminoles At Mo Morial Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) — Florida State freshman Kayla Jones shot a 3 under par 69 and is in first place in the individual standings, and the Florida State women’s golf team is in third place in the team standings after the first of three rounds of the fall-season opening Mo Morial Invitational at the Traditions Course at Texas A&M University.  Jones holds a two stroke lead over a trio of players and the Seminoles are only five strokes behind Auburn with two rounds and 36 holes remaining to be played.

Jones – who is playing in the first round of her collegiate career – birdied seven holes including her first three of the round to quickly take the individual lead in the 65-player field.  She takes a two two-stroke lead over Alex Harrell of Auburn, Hayley Mills of Kentucky and Lana Hodge of Louisiana Monroe into the Tuesday’s second round.  Mills, who won the individual title in this event in 2013, is looking to become the third player in the 19-year history of the event to win the individual title more than once.  Florida State is five strokes behind first-place Auburn and one stroke behind second-place Houston in the team standings.

“Overall, we played good golf today,” said Seminole head coach Amy Bond.  “We made some mistakes but that is normal for the first round of the year.  We have to do a better job of playing the par 5’s but I am very pleased with how we played as a team today.”

Jones (Milton, Ga.) began her collegiate career about as well as she could have imagined with birdies on her first three holes.  She birdied the par 4 first hole, the par 3 second hole and the par 4 third hole to move to 3 under par.  She added a birdie on the par five eighth hole and finished the first nine holes of her career at 2 under par.  Jones birdied four of her first eight holes and carded scores of par or better on seven of her first nine holes.

She continued to play well on her back nine as she carded three more birdies to finish with her score of 3 under par 69.  She closed the round with two birdies on her final four holes to finish as the only golfer in the field to card a score in the 60’s on the first day of the tournament.

“Kayla went out and played her game,” said Bond.  “She played within herself and stayed under control.  She enjoyed a great day striking the ball and enjoyed a solid day putting the ball.”

Jones carded seven of Florida State’s 17 birdies during the first round and carded more birdies by herself (seven) than tournament-leading Auburn did as a team (six).

Seminole sophomores Lydia Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) and Anna Sophia Böhmer (Cali, Colombia) are tied for 15th place in the individual standings with identical scores of 75.  Gumm birdied two of her final three holes of the day to finish with her 3 over par score of 75 while Böhmer was 1 under par over her last four holes to close with her score of 75.

“We are all very excited to be playing  in our first tournament of the year,” said Bohmer.  “We played well as a group but know we can play much better.  The next two days are going to decide where we finish and we are excited for the next two rounds.

Florida State is playing its first event of the fall season without All-American Matilda Castren who played in the World Amateur Team Championship in Japan last week.  The event concluded on Saturday and she is expected back on campus Monday night.

The Seminoles will play amongst the leaders in the second round as they are paired with Auburn and Houston.
