Jones has already been named to watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy. The Winter Park, Fla. native is considered one of the top returning outside linebackers in the nation after leading FSU with 95 total tackles a year ago.
Monday’s announcement marks the first pre-season honor for Smith, who is taking over as the full-time starter at weakside linebacker after splitting snaps with Vince Williams at middle linebacker the past two seasons.
A speedy, sideline-to-sideline linebacker, Smith could see his number skyrocket in 2013 with his move to the outside. Smith finished last year with a team’s third-best 64 total tackles.
