Kim Metraux Leads Seminoles Through Day 1 of NCAA Finals

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. ( – Florida State junior Kim Metraux is in a tie for 44th place in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for 19th place in the team standings after the first round of the NCAA Division I Championship Finals at Rich Harvest Farms.

The Seminoles begin play in Saturday’s second round only 12 strokes out of eighth place – the magical cut line for advancing to match play after four rounds of stroke play.

The top eight teams in the standings will compete in three rounds of match play to determine the 2017 national champion.

The first round of the 72-hole stroke play tournament was played in the worst weather that any of the 24 teams have endured.  The round was played in temperatures that did not rise above 45 degrees with a chilling rain and biting winds that hampered every stroke for all 132 players in the event.  Only two of the 132 golfers (1.5 percent) carded even par scores and only 55 of the nation’s best golfers (42 percent) carded scores below 80.

orthwestern holds the team lead with a 301 team total and three golfers in the top 10 of the individual standings.  The Wildcats are followed by Kent State in second place and Ohio State, Arizona State, Stanford and Baylor who are all tied for third place in the team standings.  August Kim of Purdue and Elodie Van Dievoet of Michigan are tied for the individual lead with even par scores of 72.  Kim and Van Dievoet were the only two players to shoot par during the round.

“The conditions were incredibly tough today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond.  “But we have three rounds to play and this is a group that can recover and play like they have all year long.  It was just one of those days where we didn’t do the little things that could have made it easier on ourselves.

“Their spirits are high and their attitudes are great.  It’s just tough when the rain is coming at you sideways and the wind is blowing at 30 (miles per hour).”

Florida State will play the second round with Southern California and Arizona State for the second consecutive day with the trio of teams teeing off beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET on hole No. 10.
