GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State senior golfer Drew Kittleson carded the second hole in one of his career in the first round and is in a tie for third place in the individual standings with a one over par total of 141 and the Seminole men’s golf team is in a tie for seventh place in the team standings after two rounds of the Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. Kittleson is only two strokes out of the individual lead and the Seminoles are only five strokes from moving into the top five in the team standings.
Florida leads its own tournament on its home course by six strokes over Auburn heading into Sunday’s third and final round. The Gators are only three strokes over par after the first 36 holes on the par 70 course. Andres Echavarria of Florida leads the individual standings as he carded a one-under par total of 139 with a 69 in the first round and a 70 in the second round. The Gators have their top four scorers in the top five of the individual standings.
Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was consistent throughout the first two rounds as he carded scores of 72 and 69 for his 141 total. He aced the par three hole No. 11 in the first round and benefited from two birdies on his final four holes of the round to finish with a score of 72. He played even better in the second round as he finished with a one under par score of 69. Kittleson carded three birdies and 16 holes at par or better at finishing under par and moving from a tie for 14th place after one round into a tie for third place heading into the final round.
“Drew has a chance to win this tournament and will be tough to beat if he strikes the ball like he did in the first and second rounds,” said Head Coach Trey Jones.
Kittleson earned the first ace of his collegiate career as he holed the par three 13th hole in one shot in the third round of the General Jim Hacker Invitational at the TPC of Myrtle Beach on March 10, 2008.
“Drew hit a nine iron from 143 yards that landed behind the hole and came back in,” said Jones. “Congratulations to Drew on his second career collegiate hole in one.”
Junior Brooks Koepka (Wellington, Fla.) is in a tie for 25th place in the individual standings with a two round total of 146. He carded scores of 72 and 74 and is only four strokes from moving into the top five of the individual standings. Koepka is followed the Seminoles’ team standings by sophomore Joaquin Lolas who is in a tie for 41st place with a two round total of 150.
“We have an opportunity tomorrow to beat some good golf teams and regain some confidence,” said Jones. “We continue to have to count a high score and that has to change. Our short games were inconsistent and that prevented us from gaining momentum.
The Seminoles will play in the third and final round of the tournament beginning Sunday at 8:00. The Seminoles will play the third round with Auburn and North Florida.
