Kubura, Burkert Highlight Garnet-Gold Scrimmage
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior Milica Kubura drove home 15 kills and finished with four assisted blocks to highlight the Florida State volleyball team’s annual Garnet vs. Gold scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at Tully Gymnasium. She was joined among the offensive standouts by Brianne Burkert, who dished out 44 assists to go along with nine digs.
Kubura was joined in double-digit kills by Bozena Culo, Mara Green and Katie Horton, who finished with 10 apiece.
Horton was also active on defense for Florida State, finishing with eight digs, three off the pace set by junior Cecilie Woie.
The combination of Green and Melanie Keil, who tallied three assisted blocks each, highlighted the Seminoles’ front row defense.
Kubura, who played alongside Horton and Melanie Keil (three kills), in all six sets finished with a .257 attack percentage after limiting herself to five errors in 35 attempts. Meanwhile, Horton capped off her performance with a .259 attack percentage with three miscues in 27 total attacks.
Burkert, who served as the primary setter for the Gold squad, had at least five assists in every set. That included a 10-assist outing in the opening set as the Gold team posted a 15-12 victory after finishing with a .381 attack percentage.
The Seminoles, who were without the services of Stasa Miljevic and Natasha Calkins, were divided into two teams that competed in six 15-point games. Since they were shorthanded several players competed for both the Garnet and Gold teams.
The Garnet squad won four of the matches (15-13, 15-7, 15-11, 15-13), while the Gold team came away with two (15-12, 15-9).
“We did exactly what we needed to do today in terms of assessing ourselves heading into the season opener with UCF next week,” said head coach Chris Poole. “We played different lineups and offenses in each of the six sets over the course of the afternoon. We can go back and look at the video, fix the problems that we see in practice next week, and really get a better idea of what our rotation will be for opening weekend.”
The Seminoles will open the 2016 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Orlando against Sunshine State rival UCF at 1 p.m.
FSU will make its official home debut on Sept. 8 when it squares off against Baylor as part of the Home2 Suites by Hilton-Tallahassee Seminole Tournament.
