TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – (Seminoles.com) – After playing four sets during opening weekend in the AVCA Showcase, freshman right side hitter Milica Kubura stepped up for the Florida State indoor volleyball team, lifting the Seminoles to three five-set victories over the week. For her efforts, she was named the ACC Freshman of the Week, which was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
“I’m very proud of Milica,” FSU Head Coach Chris Poole said. “She is still adapting to life in the United States and she has a lot of potential. She will continue to improve as she understands more of the game at the collegiate level.”
In the 3-2 win over (then No. 11) Florida on Thursday, the Belgrade, Serbia, native contributed a season high 14 kills while hitting for .400 percent. She followed that performance with another top-notch effort of 12 kills in the win over Marquette. She also had five kills against American on Sunday.
Over the weekend, Kubura averaged 2.21 kills per set, while hitting .309 percent. She also accounted for 10 total blocks, averaging 0.71 per set.
“This is such an amazing honor,” Kubura said. “I am honored to contribute to such a great program and I believe that all of our hard work will continue to pay off during the season.”
Florida State Jumps to No. 7
The Seminoles jumped one spot in the AVCA Coaches Poll to No. 7, following the 3-2 wins over Florida, Marquette and American.
The No. 7 ranking ties the second highest mark in school history which was set back in 2011 as the final ranking. FSU’s school record ranking was set in the 2012 Week Two Poll when the Seminoles we listed at No. 6.
Florida State returns to Tallahassee to host the Four Points by Sheraton Invitational, which will feature Samford, LSU and Central Arkansas. The Seminoles will first play Samford at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12.
