Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State women’s tennis concluded fall action earlier this week at the Omni Hotels Southern Regional in Troy, Ala. Junior Anca Dumitrescu and sophomore Daniela Gheorghe both advanced to the round of 16 in the regional tournament. FSU will wait to see if any Lady Seminoles will be selected to participate in the National Indoors to be held November 7-10 in Dallas.
Gheorghe continued her successful first season with wins over Bruna Discordia (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) of Florida International and Auburn’s Petra Burcik (6-3, 7-6) at the tournament. She eventually fell to No. 2 seed Julie Rotondi of Florida (4-6, 2-6). In fall action, Gheorghe is tied for the team lead in wins (6) with Dumitrescu, who was ranked No. 35 in the preseason rankings.
Dumitrescu also won her first two matches of the tournament with victories over Magdolna Rekasi (6-2, 6-1) of Mississippi State and Florida International’s Mei Ly (6-3, 6-1). Dumitrescu fell 5-7, 3-6 to Alexis Gordon of Florida in the round of 16.
Junior Christina Denny, who won the singles B draw championship in last year’s tournament, defeated South Alabama’s Andrea Kurekova (6-4, 6-3), but lost in the second round to Julia Scaringe of Florida (5-7, 7-6, 1-6).
The Lady Seminoles will open the 2003 spring season at home against Florida A&M on January 18. The match is scheduled for a 12:00 noon start.
