TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State softball team defeated
cross-town rival Florida A&M tonight 9-0 at the FAMU Softball Field. The
Lady Seminoles improved to 3-0 as the Rattlerettes fell to 1-2. Leslie
Malerich pitched her second career no-hitter and first of the season as
right fielder Kimmy Carter hit her first career homerun.

“We scored our first time at bat, which is what we wanted to
do,” Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. “We wanted to come out and put the
pressure on them early. We had some really nice plays from the defense,
Becky Wallace had a great play on the first base line and our shortstop
and third baseman did a great job as well. But I have to give a lot of
the credit to Leslie Malerich, she pitched a great game.”

The Lady Seminoles got out to an early lead in the first inning
with Natalie Bennett’s bunt single, which scored second baseman Brandi
Stuart, and first baseman Becky Wallace’s bunt single, which scored
center fielder Rita Brooks. Brooks then drove in Stephanie Elowsky, who
was pinch running Malerich, in the second inning to give the Lady
Seminoles a 3-0 lead. Stuart added an RBI in the fourth inning before
the Lady Seminoles opened up in the fifth. Catcher Teresa Edenfield
started the scoring in the inning with her second career homerun, a
two-run shot over the left-center wall on an 0-2 count. Her first career
homerun as against FAMU as well last year at the Lady Seminole Complex.

“We came out tonight with a lot of confidence,” Edenfield said.
“After going 0-2 I said to myself ‘I’m going to beat her this time’ and
I went in and did exactly that. It felt really good to give the team
that kind of a boost.”

With two Lady Seminoles on base, Carter took a 2-1 pitch over
the left field wall. The three-run homer was Carter’s first at Florida

“I just went up there with the determination and said a little
prayer,” Carter said. “I said ‘God, give me the power to hit this ball’
and I did. It was really exciting, especially this early in the season.”

Florida State held the Rattlerettes in the fifth inning, ending
the game on the eight run rule. Bennett and Stuart were both 2-3 with an
RBI with Carter, left fielder Andi Lyons and Malerich all going 1-2.
Malerich also pitched her second career no-hitter, striking out six and
walking two.

“I was really confident in our defense tonight,” Malerich said.
“I knew that if FAMU got a hit, the girls would be there to get the out.
We also hit well tonight and got the job done, which made my job a
little easier as well.”
