Lady Seminoles Fall To Hurricanes In A Heartbreaker

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The 41st ranked Lady Seminoles took on the Hurricanes of the University of Miami on Friday, March 1st, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The Hurricanes entered the contest with a ranking of 30th nationally and a record of 6-1. On this day, Miami proved to be too much for Florida State, as the Seminoles fell, 4-3.


Florida State got off to a strong start on the day as they swept doubles and earned the first point of the day. Alida Gallovits and Christina Denny performed well at the No. 2 position as they defeated Staci Stevens and Ewelina Skaza of Miami by a score of 8-4. At the No. 1 position, it was Jessica Balbuena and Lauren Walker who defeated Miami’s Mari Toro and Marcy Hora, 8-5. Beth Lawrence and Anca Dumitrescu, playing No. 3 doubles, defeated Sihem Bennacer and Sara Robbins of Miami, 8-6.


The Lady Seminoles performed well in singles play, but fell in four of six matches. Senior Balbuena led the way for Florida State as she overpowered Bennacer of Miami in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0. At the No. 3 position, Denny defeated Stevens of Miami in three sets by a score of 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (5). Freshman Meredith Fish fell to Robbins of Miami in an exciting match at the No. 6 position, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-5. Fish battled back in the first set after being down 1-5, before falling 7-6 (6) in a tiebreak.


The Lady Seminoles will return to action on Sunday, March 3rd, when they take on the Harvard Crimson at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the Florida State campus. The match is set for 10:00 a.m.
