Dr. JoAnne Graf is in her 22nd season at the helm of the Lady Seminole
program. Her record stands at 1040-309-6. In 1999, Graf became the first
coach in NCAA Division I history to amass 1,000 Division I victories and
the first to reach that plateau at one university. She has guided FSU to
five College World Series, 12 NCAA Regional appearances, two slowpitch
National Championships and seven ACC Championships. Her coaching has
produced 17 All-Americans and numerous all-region and all-conference
(46-8) East Carolina * FSU leads 16-1
The last meeting between FSU and ECU was in 1997 — a 10-0 victory for the
(18-30) Campbell * FSU leads 6-0
FSU swept Campbell last season with 5-0 and 2-0 shutouts.
The East Carolina series is important for many reasons. Not only would
wins over a ranked regional opponent be advantageous, but wins over a
Southern Atlantic Alliance opponent would be most beneficial. The five ACC
schools and East Carolina make up the Southern Atlantic Alliance. All six
teams play a doubleheader throughout the season and the team with the best
record at the end of that competition, earns an automatic bid to regionals.
The Tribe’s sweep over North Carolina was FSU’s eighth sweep this season,
but first since March 22nd when FSU swept Ohio.
SWEET SWEEP #2
FSU swept the ACC weekly softball honors for April 17th as Staci Brandon
was named the Player of the Week and Leslie Malerich was named the league’s
pitcher of the week for the fifth time this season. The duo led the Noles
to a 4-1 record over the past week.
Brandon turned in a solid week at the plate for FSU as she finished the
five games, 10-for-23 (.435) with eight RBI and six runs scored. On
Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader with Auburn, the junior left
fielder went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. On Sunday, she went
3-for-8 eight in the two games with North Carolina, including a two-run
triple in FSU’s 10-9 win in game one, and drove in the winning run in game
two with an RBI single.
Malerich was once again dominant on the mound as she went 4-1 for the
week with a pair of shutout victories. She opened the week with a
complete-game, 7-0 win at Florida A&M, and followed that outing with
another complete-game, 7-0 win over Auburn in the first game of a twin
bill. On Sunday, in the second game of FSU’s doubleheader with North
Carolina, the sophomore hurler entered the contest with one out in the
first inning and the Seminoles trailing by a 4-0 score. She proceeded to
shut out the Tar Heels for the remaining 6.2 innings en route to her fourth
win of the week, a 5-4 decision.
ON A ROLL
Several FSU players are enjoying hitting streaks. Here’s a look…
FSU set a new season-high with 14 hits in game two of the DH with Auburn on
April 15th, but only eight of the hits were in the first seven innings.
FSU tied its previous season-high for hits with 13 in its 7-0 win in game
one and all nine starters got hits in the game.
The Lady Seminoles have recorded double digit hits in four of the last five
games and 11 games overall this season. FSU is 10-1 in those contests with
its only loss coming to Auburn, 5-4, in 13 innings.
PUTTING A STOP TO ‘EM
Leslie Malerich earned her 11th shutout of the season in FSU’s 7-0 win over
Auburn. Malerich struck out nine batters in the game. Her season-high is
11 vs. FAMU on Feb. 12. Prior to Auburn’s run in the 13th inning in game
two, Malerich had pitched 25.1 consecutive innings without giving up a run.
She pitched 16 innings on Saturday alone.
BRING IT TO BRANDON
Leadoff hitter Staci Brandon has now hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games,
including her current six-game hitting streak. She went 3-for-4 with one
run scored and two RBIs in the Tribe’s 7-0 win over Auburn. It was the
third straight game that Brandon had multi-RBIs. In FSU’s 9-1 win over
FAMU on April 9th, Brandon went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double,
drove in three runs and scored one of her own. Against FAMU on April 12th,
she went 1-for-4, with three RBIs and one run scored. She also had three
hits in the second Auburn and first UNC game, giving her 11 multi-hit games
TOO MANY HITS
Auburn belted 16 hits in the second game of the doubleheader (10 in first
seven hittings). It’s the most hits that FSU pitching has allowed this
season. UNC had 10 hits in the first game on Sunday, marking just the
third time this season that FSU pitching has allowed double-digit hits.
FSU has a 1-2 record in those games.
Game two of the Auburn series went 13 innings, three hours and 52 minutes.
The two teams combined for 30 hits. The 13 innings is the most innings FSU
has played in a game this season. It now makes the Tribe 2-6 in
extra-inning ball games this season. Prior to the game with Auburn, the
Lady Seminoles went nine innings in a 1-0 win over Bethune-Cookman on Feb.
WHITE-STOKES MADE BRIEF APPEARANCE
Junior pitcher Jenn White-Stokes, who has been suffering from bicep
tendonitis in her pitching arm and had not made a pitching appearance since
April 1st, saw four innings of action on Saturday, April 15th vs. Auburn.
She faced 21 batters, allowed four earned runs on eight hits and walked
one. She was not the pitcher of record.
DID YOU KNOW THAT HEADING INTO THE WEEK…

LIKE TO WIN BIG
When the Lady Seminoles win, they seem to win big! The Tribe is 14-3 in
games decided by five or more runs. FSU hasn’t had much success with the
close games though. The Lady Seminoles are 10-11 in one-run games.
FSU AND FAMU
With its 7-0 win on April 12th, FSU went 5-0 vs. the Rattlerettes this
season. In two of those games, the Tribe eight-run ruled FAMU in five
innings and three games were shutouts. FSU’s last loss to FAMU was on
April 14th, 1999.
SHUTTING ‘EM OUT!
Florida State pitching has produced 18 shutouts this season, including a
no-hitter against Florida A&M and a perfect game against Princeton. Leslie
Malerich leads the unit with 11 solo and two combined shutouts. The Lady
Seminoles have been shutout seven times this year.
WASN’T IT JUST GRAND!
Freshman Brandi Stuart blasted a grand slam home run in the bottom of the
seventh inning of game one vs. Florida to lift the Lady Seminoles to a 6-3
victory over the Gators. It was Stuart’s first career grand slam and her
second home run of the year. Stuart is the only freshman playing on the
team this season (Beth Wade is redshirting).
After committing 14 errors in four games, April 1st and 2nd, the Tribe had
four errors in the first game against UF. Finally, in the second game, the
Lady Seminoles went error-free, snapping a 10-game streak of games with at
least one error.
APRIL FOOL’S DAY BUT NO JOKE
The Lady Seminoles committed a season-high seven errors in their 8-2 loss
to Georgia Tech on April 1st. In fact, the team struggled defensively all
weekend with 14 errors in four games.

The ACC Softball Tournament championship game on Monday, May 1st will be

MALERICH — ACC HONORS #4
Malerich earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the fourth time this
season on March 27. Malerich went 4-0 for the week, including two
shutouts, with a 0.54 ERA and one save. With a 3-0 record and a save in

MORE ALL TOURNAMENT HONORS

Becky Wallace, Brandi Stuart and Teresa Edenfield. Wallace batted .462
with two RBIs. Stuart batted .353 with three runs and three RBIs while
Edenfield batted .316 with four RBIs.
Florida State showed some real fight against Wisconsin in the final day of
the UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge. Down 5-0 after two innings, the Tribe
scored two runs in the fourth and then exploded for four runs on five hits
in the seventh inning. After giving up five runs in the second inning,
Jenn White-Stokes allowed just three Badger hits the next four innings and
Leslie Malerich came into the game in the seventh to earn the save.
Junior Serita Brooks used her speed to round the bases for her second home
run of the season vs. Ohio, but first in-the-park home run. It is the
second in-the-park home run for the Lady Seminoles this season as Jenn
White-Stokes recorded one vs. FAMU on February 12th.
Serita Brooks leads the team with 22 multi-hit games this season. The
junior also has four multi-RBI games on the year. She also put together a
hitting streak of 10 games between Feb. 16-27th.
Juniors Staci Brandon and Serita Brooks were named to the 2000 Tallahassee
Democrat Florida State Invitational All-Tournament team over the weekend.
Brandon led all FSU players with a .750 batting average on 9-of-12 at the
plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brooks hit .529 on 9-of-17,
including a double and a triple, and scored two runs and drove in three
EDENFIELD CAME BACK STRONG
Senior Teresa Edenfield missed the majority of the FSU Invitational with a
sprained left knee. She saw one at bat in the five games and it was a hit
against Northern Iowa. Edenfield returned to action on Wednesday, March
22nd and played in all eight of FSU’s games that week and what a week she
had! Playing in all eight games, she batted .346 with nine hits, including
two doubles, and a team-leading seven RBIs.
HOME RUN CLUB

.386, hits with 73 and stolen bases with 37. She has also earned ACC

team with 37 stolen bases, while Brandi Stuart has 28. As a team, FSU has
recorded 94 stolen bases to its opponents’ 33.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT
The Lady Seminoles are 36-24 heading into this weekend’s action. Eleven of
the Tribe’s 24 losses have been by just one run and five of those games
went extra innings before being decided.
Two records were tied or broken during the Seminole Classic, February
11-13. The Cal-Berkeley Bears tied the record for team RBI’s with 10 and
set a new record for runs by one team in a game with 14 against FAMU on Feb
12. The Tribe committed a complex record seven errors vs. Georgia Tech on
