Lady Seminoles Host FAMU To Open 2002 Season
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team is set to open the 2002 season at home against cross-town rival, FAMU Tuesday, January 22nd. The match will be at 2 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match will mark the fourth meeting between the two teams. The Lady Seminoles have not faced the Lady Rattlers in fourteen years. Their last meeting was in 1988. The Lady Seminoles won that contest 8-1.


The Lady Seminoles enter the match ranked 35th and the Lady Ratters are unranked in the ITA preseason poll. The Florida State women’s tennis team returns four starters including seniors Alida Gallovits and Jessica Balbuena. Gallovits was ranked 35th in the ITA fall preseason singles poll, however was not ranked in the fall final rankings due to insufficient data. She didn’t play enough matches to qualify for the rankings due to injury.


The Seminoles also have sophomore transfer Anca Dumitrescu, who was ranked 68th in the final fall rankings released by the ITA. Dumitrescu transferred to Florida State from Virginia Commonwealth University, where her singles record as a freshman was 27-5. She finished the fall, her first semester as a Seminole, with a 7-3 record.


The home opener against FAMU Tuesday, January 22nd is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
