Lately: Florida State lost two in its first week of Atlantic Coast Conference matches this season. The Lady Seminoles were downed by Duke 1-3 in their ACC opener followed by a 0-3 decision at Wake Forest to close out the Tobacco Road swing.

Lately: The Gators opened Southeastern Conference play with a pair of victories in Gainesville. Florida downed Arkansas 15-12, 15-11, 15-6 on Friday and swept past LSU 15-6, 15-3, 15-5 on Sunday. The Gators’ only losses have come against #1 Pacific and #4 Nebraska.

With a pair of victories in 1998, the Gators edged past Florida State in the overall series record 20-22. The series record includes all matches dating back to the start of head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud’s tenure in 1976. Florida has taken control in the 1990s, winning 13 of 16 matches this decade including 8 straight regular season matchups. FSU last victory over the Gators was a 15-9, 15-13, 16-14 win in Tallahassee in 1994.
Duke 3, Florida State 1
Duke tallied 11 service aces and outhit the Lady Seminoles .286 to .221 to down FSU in four games in Durham. Norisha Campbell pounded out 17 kills and notched 3 blocks and Aisha Thornton came up big at the net with seven blocks.
Wake Forest 3, Florida State 0
Aisha Thornton posted another 7 blocks at Wake Forest, but the Demon Deacons rallied for a 20-18 game two victory to steal the momentum enroute to a three-game sweep of the Noles.
Florida State Hosts Maryland

FSU head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud has 594 career victories. Maryland’s Janice Kruger has 598. The Terps face Virginia Tuesday, then the Noles Friday in what FSU hopes is not win #600 for the Terrapin head coach.

FSU falls at Florida 15-5, 8-15, 11-15, 10-15
Florida State dominated game one 15-5, but the Gators recharged to take games 2-4 for the 3-1 victory in front of over 3,000 fans in the O’Connell Center. Three Lady Seminoles posted double-doubles: Holly Schneider, Aisha Thornton, and LaToya Washington.

FSU falls to the Gators 7-15, 12-15, 15-17
In front of near-capacity crowd of over 2,400 in Tully Gym, Florida handed the Lady Seminoles their only home loss of the 1998 season with a three-game sweep. LaToya Washington led FSU with 20 kills and 10 digs. The Gators outhit Florida State .324 to .234 and outblocked FSU 10-7.

While the records may be decieving, Florida State was below .500 when it last defeated Florida in 1994. The Lady Seminoles entered the Halloween night match with an 11-12 record while the Gators came to Tully with an impressive 20-3 record and a Top 10 ranking. Florida State handed Florida its only three-game sweep of the ’94 season downing the Gators 15-9, 15-13, 16-14.
Campbell Stars in ACC Play
Sophomore middle hitter Norisha Campbell posted some big numbers during the Lady Seminoles’ first two conference matches last weekend. Campbell notched 30 kills on a .469 hitting percentage against Duke and Wake Forest for a 4.29 kill per game average in ACC play. She also tallied 7 blocks.
Azevedo Awesome in First Start
In her first start as a Lady Seminole Friday night at Duke, sophomore outside hitter Luana Ruiz Azevedo notched personal bests in kills and digs with 15 of each registering the first double-double of her collegiate career.
Head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud is approaching the 600-victory plateau. Entering this week’s play, she has a total of 594 career victories, all as head coach of the Lady Seminoles.
Despite losing its first two ACC matches, Florida State is on pace with its 1998 ACC Championship squad. The Lady Seminoles lost their first 2 ACC matches last season (at Clemson & at Georgia Tech) but finished the regular season 11-5 enroute to their first ACC title with a tournament championship victory.
Freshman middle hitter Dawn Hough is questionable for Tuesday’s Florida match. She sat out FSU’s weekend matches due to swelling associated with a right knee sprain. She is expected to be re-evaluated on Wednesday. Junior outside hitter Jennifer Werrick who also took the weekend off to rest her ailing ankles will return to the Lady Seminole starting lineup against the Gators Tuesday.
Florida State has had six games in its twelve matches that have needed more than the usual 15 points for victory. FSU is 2-4 in these games with 17-15 game two win over Auburn and a 16-14 game two victory over Florida Atlantic. Most recently, FSU fell 18-20 in game two against Wake Forest.
