TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lady Seminoles have gotten off to a great start this season. Florida State entered Saturday’s contest with the University of Central Florida with a season record of 3-1. The next opponent for the Seminoles will be the Lady Tigers of LSU.
Florida State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the match as the Seminoles won all three doubles. Seniors Alida Gallovits and Jessica Balbuena led the way for the Seminoles in doubles play as they defeated Anna Westin and Julie Pecastaing of UCF at the No. 1 position, 8-5. In No. 3 doubles, it was freshmen Lauren Walker and Amber Tantee that defeated Amira Semara and Kristina Lohmos, 8-5. After a score of 6-6 had been reached in No. 2 doubles, sophomores Christina Denny and Anca Dumitrescu took over to defeat Emmanuelle Sauze and Marieke Gunawan, 8-6.
The Lady Seminoles took three out of six matches in singles play to seal the victory over the Lady Knights. Dumitrescu got the first win in singles play as she defeated Westin 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 2 position, Denny recorded a victory over Sauze by a score of 6-4, 6-3, giving the Seminoles two wins in singles play. Freshman Meredith Fish defeated Sona Morawkova of UCF 6-3, 6-3 and clinched the match for the Lady Seminoles.
“Some of our players performed extremely well today,” said Florida State head coach Lise Gregory. “The thing about tennis is that your team must be disciplined and play as one unit, this is something we will work on this week as we look ahead to LSU.”
Florida State will return to action as they host the 28th-ranked Lady Tigers of LSU on Saturday, February 9 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
