RALEIGH, N.C. –
The 48th-ranked Lady Seminoles traveled to North Carolina in hopes of bringing home two victories over the weekend. The first stop on Florida State’s road trip was Raleigh, N.C., where the Lady Seminoles defeated the Wolfpack, 5-2. Florida State will complete their trip down “Tobacco Road” Sunday, March 24th, as they face the 2nd-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The match versus NC State got off to a great start for the Lady Seminoles as they swept the Wolfpack in doubles play. Florida State’s Lauren Walker and Jessica Balbuena defeated Katrina Gildemeister and Kristen Nicholls at the No. 1 position, 8-6. In No. 2 doubles, Alida Gallovits and Christina Denny defeated Myrna Bawono and Jennifer Jassawalla of NC State by a score of 8-5. Anca Dumitrescu and Beth Lawrence, playing at the No. 3 position, overpowered Loni Worsley and Landis Strader of NC State, 8-3.
After sweeping the Wolfpack in doubles and taking the first point of the match, the Lady Seminoles did not look back. Florida State carried the momentum into singles play as they won four of six matches. Sophomore Dumitrescu, ranked 36th nationally, lead the way for the Lady Seminoles as she defeated Gildemeister at the No. 1 position by a score of 6-2, 6-1. In No. 2 singles, Florida State’s Gallovits, ranked 114th in the country, defeated Bawono, 6-4, 6-0. Balbuena, playing at the No. 3 position, downed Nicholls of NC State, 6-2, 6-0. Walker handed Danielle Staddelmann of NC State a 6-4, 6-2 loss in No. 5 doubles. At the No. 4 position, NC State’s Jassawalla defeated Denny by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Meredith Fish fell to Worsley of NC State at the No. 6 position by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
The Lady Seminoles will travel west to Winston-Salem Sunday, March 24th, to take on the 2nd-ranked Demon Deacons. This will mark the 20th meeting between the two schools. Wake Forest holds a 4-15 advantage in the all-time series record. The Lady Seminoles will look to avenge a 3-4 loss to the Deacons last year. The last Florida State victory in this series came in 1994 when the Lady Seminoles won 5-4.
Florida State will return home on March 30th, when they host the Tarheels of North Carolina. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University.
