Jan. 22, 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team began their 2002 season 1-0 with a 6-1 rout of FAMU Tuesday afternoon. It took only 2 hours for the Seminoles to win their first meeting of the season against FAMU. Junior Beth Lawrence and Sophomore Anca Dumitrescu brought the first doubles victory for the team with a confident 8-0 over Charlana Brown and Niki Williams from FAMU. Shortly after that, the doubles point was assured with the Seminoles winning the other two matches. Seniors Alida Gallovits and Jessica Balbuena finished with an 8-4 at number one in doubles and the tandem of Lauren Walker and Chistina Denny defeated their opponents with an 8-1 at the number two position.

It was returning senior Balbuena, at number three, who brought the first victory after just an hour of playing. 6-0, 6-0 was her score against Sahira Williams from FAMU.

“I was very pleased with my performance today,” said Balbuena.

After a great comeback at the Regional Championships this past fall, Denny, continued her series of victories as she easily defeated Amber Pipkins from FAMU 6-1, 6-0 at the second position.

FSU sophomore Beth Lawrence won in straight sets against Charlana Brown and Dia Collins from FAMU. Charlene Kambarani brought the only victory for the opponents as she defeated FSU’s Meredith Fish in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Overall, this was a great start for FSU women’s tennis team. With a new powerful and very talented team and with two valuable seniors presenting on the line-up the Lady Seminoles are on their way toward a great season.

The Lady Seminoles next home match is Saturday, January 26th against Georgia Southern. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. The Seminoles also will play host to the Lady Commodores of Vanderbilt on Sunday, January 27th at 11 a.m.
