Lately: Florida State fell in its final home Atlantic Coast Conference matches of 1999 last weekend as Clemson and Georgia Tech each downed the Lady Seminoles by a 3-1 margin. FSU’s last victory was an out-of-conference win over Jacksonville on October 19th.

Current Streak: Won 19.

Lately: Florida swept past a pair of SEC opponents in Gainsville last weekend with 3-0 victories over Tennessee and Kentucky. The Gators have not lost since September 5th. UF has won 12 matches since its last meeting with FSU on September 28th. During that time, Florida lost just one game, at Auburn on October 8th.

Florida State Trails 21-23 since 1976.

The Gators extended their lead in the series to two matches with their victory over Florida State earlier this season. The 21-23 series record includes all matches dating back to the start of head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud’s tenure in 1976. Florida has taken control in the 1990s, winning 14 of 17 matches this decade including 9 straight regular season matchups. FSU’s last victory over the Gators was a 3-0 sweep in Tallahassee in ?94.

September 23, 1998

FSU falls at Florida 15-5, 8-15, 11-15, 10-15

Florida State dominated game one 15-5, but the Gators recharged to take games 2-4 for the 3-1 victory in front of over 3,000 fans in the O’Connell Center. Three Lady Seminoles posted double-doubles: Holly Schneider, Aisha Thornton, and LaToya Washington.

November 3, 1998

FSU falls to the Gators 7-15, 12-15, 15-17

In front of near-capacity crowd of over 2,400 in Tully Gym, Florida handed the Lady Seminoles their only home loss of the 1998 season with a three-game sweep. LaToya Washington led FSU with 20 kills and 10 digs. The Gators outhit Florida State .324 to .234 and outblocked FSU 10-7.

September 28, 1999

FSU falls to the Gators 5-15, 4-15, 9-15

In a matchup of Florida State’s rookies versus Florida’s veterans, it was experience that prevailed. The Gators swept past the Lady Seminoles in Tully Gym in front of over 1,700 fans. UF outhit FSU .415 to .220, but the Noles outblocked the Gators 10-6. Middles Aisha Thornton and Norisha Campbell led Florida State. Thornton posted 13 kills and 5 blocks while Campbell notched 12 kills and 4 blocks. Each hit over .400 for the match.

Nole Notes

Injury Report

Junior outside hitter Jennifer Werrick fractured her right ankle during practice last week and will be out for the remainder of the season. She joins fellow OH Kristin Frye, who remains sidelined while recovering from a hairline fracture of her right ankle suffered during game two of FSU’s match with Virginia on October 3rd.

Ranked Opponents Remain

Of Florida State’s final five regular-season matches, three are against ranked opponents. The Lady Semnioles face #4 Florida and #22 North Carolina on the road this week. Last Friday in Tully Gym, Florida State posted a strong showing against ACC-foe #14 Clemson, winning game one before losing the momentum and falling in four games. (Rankings through November 2nd)

Double-Digit Numbers

Junior outside hitter Jennifer Werrick had been FSU’s offensive leader throughout the season. Werrick has double-digit kill totals in 17 of 22 matches played in 1999. She has tallied 10 or more kills in 9 of 12 matches for the Lady Seminoles in October and recorded a career-high 27 kills against UT-Arlington on September 10th. She and middle hitter Aisha Thornton have each topped 20 kills in three matches this season. Thornton notched 23 against Maryland on October 1st.

Approaching 600

Head coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud is approaching the 600-victory plateau. She enters this week’s play with a total of 597 career victories, all as head coach of the Lady Seminoles.

15-0 Win, It’s An Annual Event

Florida State powered past NC State 15-0 in game four on October 17th in Tully Gym to nail down its first ACC victory of the season. FSU now has four 15-0 game victories over the past three seasons, all at home. Florida State has not been shutout in a game since 1996.
