ATHENS, Ga. — The Florida State men’s tennis team returned home
from Athens, Ga., and the Southern Collegiates with a Division
Championship. Freshman Rodrigo Laub opened his collegiate tennis career
winning four straight matches and the Southern Collegiate Division IV
Laub defeated Stetson’s Thomas Brekke in the finals on Saturday,
6-3, 6-7(5), 7-5. In the Division III singles semifinals, FSU’s Jeff
Scarella lost to Tennessee’s Matt Turner 6-3, 6-3 and in the Division II
singles semifinals FSU’s freshman Deni Franulovic lost a tough three-set
match to Wake Forest’s Mike Murray for the first loss of his career.
In doubles action for FSU, the duo of Oren Belliti and Rodrigo Laub
won their quarterfinal match on Saturday against Mercer’s Akharein and
Witting, 8-5. In the semifinals the freshmen pair was upset by North
Carolina-Greensboro’s Haddon and McWhorter, 8-6. FSU’s Jay Travis and Deni
Franulovic lost their quarterfinal doubles match on Saturday to Keeter and
Nava of East Tennessee State University, 8-5.
The Seminoles return home for their first home event of the year on
October 22-24 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. It will be the first
time for Seminole fans to see new head coach Dwayne Hultquist and four new
Seminole players, including Southern Collegiate champion Rodrigo Laub.
