Lauer And Knight Lead Seminoles In Second Round Of Brickyard Collegiate Championship

Oct. 12, 2008

MACON, Ga. –
Seminole junior Seath Lauer shot a 71 and moved into a tie for eighth place in the individual standings and the Florida State men’s golf team jumped three places into seventh place in the team standings as the second round of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard Golf Course came to a close. Lauer moved up six spots in the individual standings and has put himself into position to earn the fourth top-10 individual finish of his career entering Monday’s third and final round of the tournament.

Florida State counted Lauer’s 71 along with a 69 by junior Cameron Knight and two scores of 74 by sophomore Drew Kittleson and senior Matt Savage.

Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) led the Seminoles in the second round with a one-under par score of 69 – only two strokes off of his career best score for a single round and the second time he has shot single round score in the 60’s during his Florida State career.

The Seminoles enjoyed the fifth best score of the 15 teams in the tournament in the second round as they carded a team score of 288. Their team score in the second round was 11 strokes better than their first round score – the third best improvement of all of the teams in the event from round one to round two.

Georgia, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech are tied for first after the first two rounds with team scores of 577. Georgia moved up from fourth place after the first round, Virginia Tech moved up from third place after 18 holes and Georgia Tech held its place among the leaders through the first 36 holes played. Nick Archambault of Penn State is the overall leader with a two-day total of 140. He has a one stroke lead over Drew Weaver of Virginia Tech and Dave May of Clemson.

Florida State is five strokes out of fifth place and only 10 strokes from catching the trio of teams that sit at the top of the leader board.

Lauer (Huntington, Ill.) continued to play well in the tournament with scores of 73 and 71 for a two-day total of 144. He played his final 15 holes of the second round at one-under par and scored only one hole above par after his third hole of the afternoon. If not for a double bogey six on the par four 12th hole, he could have challenged his all-time low single round score of 67. Lauer has five birdies and 24 holes at par through the first two rounds of the tournament.

Knight moved from a tie for 57th place after the first round into a tie for 21st place after the second round with his near career best score of 67. His score of 69 was tied for the second best score of the 81 golfers in the event during the second round. Knight played well throughout the second round but especially on his second nine. He was three under par with three birdies and six holes at par to finish his round. Knight leads the Seminoles with six birdies during the first two rounds of the event.

Kittleson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Savage (Louisville, Ky.) carded identical scores of 74 in the second round. Kittleson is in a tie for 26th place with a two-day total of 147 while Savage is in a tie for 58th place with a two day total of 153. Freshman Brooks Koepka carded a second round score of 78.

“I was proud of the way the team played today,” said head coach Trey Jones. “From a standpoint of confidence today was a big result from Cameron. He has really worked hard and really needed a good result. I was glad out junior class (Knight and Lauer) stepped up; they both need to continue to play well for us to continue to get better.

“The fall is about finding out what each player does well and what each player needs to work on,” continued Jones. “Now that every player on our roster has played in at least one tournament this fall we know what we have to fix to get to where we want to be in the spring.”

The final round of 18 holes will be played on Monday. This is the final event of the fall season for the Seminoles.
