Lee in First Place at Irish Creek

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Seminoles.com) – It was an epic Saturday for Florida State Men’s golfer Josh Lee, as his 7-under 135 (66-69) through two rounds leads the field at the Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate played at the Club at Irish Creek.

The Orange Park, Fla., native opened the tournament with a season-low 66, catching fire with five consecutive birdies from holes 2-6. He totaled seven birdies to just two bogeys. His eye-opening 66 is behind only teammates Cristobal Del Solar and Harry Ellis for the low round by a Seminole this year, with both of them shooting 65s.

Lee added a 2-under 69 to finish the day strong in the second round.

Lee is in first place (-7), followed by FSU sophomore Bennett Baker in second (-6) and Del Solar (-5) is tied for third. The Seminoles are in second place at 9-under overall (286-273), shooting 11-under as a unit in the second round to put themselves right in contention.

Kennesaw State is two strokes ahead of FSU at 11-under, while UNF (-8) is in third place and UNCG (-4) and Wake Forest (-4) are tied for fourth.

Baker, a Tallahassee native, was in a groove on Saturday. He shot an opening-round 68 where he totaled seven birdies, then followed with another 68 in the second round that featured four birdies and steadier play with 13 pars made. Baker is playing this weekend’s tournament individually, and his scores do not count toward the team results.

Del Solar carded his second eagle of the season in his second round, needing just three shots to get to the bottom of the cup on the par-5, 541-yard sixth hole. Del Solar and Baker are tied for the lead in par 3 scoring at 2.75, while FSU is tied for the team lead in par 3 scoring at +1.

Redshirt junior Harry Ellis is tied for 14th after shooting 1-under Saturday, recording a 2-over 73 in the first round and following with a 3-under 68 in the second.

Redshirt freshman Jonathan Keppler is tied for 54th at 4-over, while freshman Jamie Li is tied for 86th at +12.

A shot-gun start will begin the final round on Sunday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. for all golfers.
