TULSA, Okla. – After three days of long matches and hard work, Benjamin Lock advanced to the singles main draw of the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday. He competes Thursday at the University of Tulsa against No. 10 Soren Hess-Olesen of Texas.
In the final match of the day, Lock faced Bruno Semenzato of Duke for the chance to advance to the main draw. Semenzato won the first set after both players stayed on serve. Lock stepped up his play, and to the baseline, and did not back down to easily win the next two sets to win the match 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.
“I’m really happy with the way I have been playing this week,” said Lock. “I have been training hard with the coaches this semester and it’s great to see the hard work paying off. Today was a tough match physically but after the first set, I started playing some of my best tennis of the fall. Coach Nick (Crowell) did a great job on the court with me. He kept me calm and helped me finish strong. I’m extremely happy to qualify for the main draw but tomorrow is a new day.”
Lock started Wednesday morning in the qualifying doubles draw with partner Marco Nunez. The paired defeated Virginia’s Harrison Richmond and Justin Shane 8-7 (6) in the third round. The duo played the final round against the No. 49 couple in the nation, Sean Weber and Nick Horton of NC State. After a tight match going back and forth, Florida State lost 8-6.
“I’m really proud of Benjamin for qualifying to the main draw of All-Americans,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “He lost in three sets last year so you can see the hard work and improvement he put in this summer. He had a tough draw and had a long day with three matches today, but it just shows the conditioning and hard work he’s put into practice.”
