Oct. 13, 2013

ATLANTA, Ga. – Benjamin Lock of the Florida State men’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of singles and the semifinals of doubles on Sunday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Play continues Monday morning at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex at Georgia Tech.

In a day with 17 matches, the Seminoles were only able to win eight, but still have Lock and sophomore Marco Nunez competing in both singles and doubles.

This morning the Seminoles took the court for the main draw of singles round of 32. No. 116 Lock won a quick 6-2, 6-1 match against USF’s Paul Polarczyk. Junior Cristian Gonzalez Mendez defeated Miami’s Gabriel Flores 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 while sophomore Michael Rinaldi topped another Hurricane in William Albanese 6-2, 6-0.

In the round of 16, only Lock won his match but it was with a decisive 6-2, 6-3 win over yet another Hurricane in Henrique Tsukamoto. He takes on Maxx Lipman in the quarterfinals on Monday morning.

“I felt I played well in singles today,” said Lock. “I played my game and focused well at important moments in my matches. I feel I’m getting better each match so hopefully I can play some of my best tennis tomorrow.”

In the consolation draw, senior Blake Davis won in the round of 32 but rolled his ankle in the round of 16 resulting in him pulling from the draw.

Nunez faced Arnav Mohanty of Mercer to gain a 6-3, 6-2 win in the round of 32. In the next round, he won a tight two set match against Georgia Tech’s Cole Fiegel 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2). He plays in the quarterfinals of the consolation match Monday.

In doubles play, Nunez and Lock upset a ranked team for the second straight day with an 8-3 win over No. 58 Robert Schulze and Sofiane Chevallier of Georgia State. The duo plays Florida’s Gordon Watson and Elliott Orkin in Monday’s semifinals.

“Doubles has been good this fall,” said Nunez. “We beat a solid team from Georgia State today and are pumped to play Florida tomorrow in the semifinals. I’m glad to have my first singles win as a Seminole today, even though it came later than I expected. I’m starting to get my game back, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.”

“Marco and I have been playing good in doubles,” continued Lock. “Today was another good day for us. We complement each other really well and I like our chances tomorrow.”
