Lock, Nunez Set For Doubles Final

Oct. 14, 2013

ATLANTA, Ga. – Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez have only played doubles together for a semester, but their hard work is paying off at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships as the duo posted their third upset of the tournament on Monday in the semifinals.

“Benjamin and Marco played well again today,” said associate coach Nick Crowell. “They came out focused and didn’t drop serve in the match. They continue to mesh well together and will prepare tonight for the finals on Tuesday.”

This morning, the team came out against No. 57 Elliott Orkin and Gordon Watson of Florida. That Florida group defeated Florida State’s No. 5 doubles team of Dominic Cotrone and Blake Davis on Sunday so the Seminoles knew who they were going to be facing.

After staying on serve, the Seminoles got a break to come up with the 8-6 win in the semifinals. On Sunday Lock and Nunez topped the No. 58 team in the nation after a huge upset over the No. 3 doubles team in the nation from Georgia on Friday. Tuesday they take on the No. 39 team of Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz of USF.

“Marco and I played really solid today,” said Lock. “Marco served great and played well on the big points. I’m happy with our success today but we want to take this whole thing.”

The doubles champion of the tournament advances to the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships running from November 7-11 at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

In the singles main draw quarterfinals No. 116 Lock fell to Maxx Lipman of Florida 7-5, 6-3.
