TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The 15th-ranked Seminole softball team used a complete game three-hitter from senior All-American Leslie Malerich and big games from seniors Kimmy Carter and Monique Marier to down Penn State 4-0 at the Seminole Classic Tournament. Carter went two-for-three on the day and Marier launched a sixth-inning two-run single down the left field line to improve FSU to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in the tournament.

Florida State used a couple of Penn State miscues to break out to an early 2-0 advantage. Malerich, in her first time at the plate in more than a year, drew a lead-off walk. Tatiana George then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by Nittany Lion pitcher Marisa Harris at first. The error allowed both Malerich and George to come around and gave FSU the lead.

The Seminoles threatened to add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when a two-out rally nearly plated two more runs. Senior Kimmy Carter’s second hit of the day, this one a single to left field, started things off. Monique Marier then singled the first pitch she saw up the middle advancing Carter to second. Both Marier and Carter advanced on a double steal before Malerich lined a shot that PSU third baseman Jennifer Tripken saved from being a two-out two-run single to left.

The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when FSU added two more runs to move out to a 4-0 lead. Jessica van der Linden got things started when she singled a 3-2 pitch to left center. After an error put Brandi Stuart on first and advanced van der Linden to second, Elisa Velasco reached on another error loading the bases. After van der Linden was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice, Marier came up with the big hit of the inning singling down the left field line and knocked in two RBIs.

Penn State, who has played in the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons, dropped to 1-3 on the season with pitcher Marisa Hanson suffering her first loss of the year.

The Seminoles face Maryland at 4:45 p.m. today before concluding play in the Seminole Classic Tournament Sunday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m. against St Johns. For complete coverage of Seminole softball please visit our official athletic website at www.seminoles.com.
