TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Junior Ashley Mangan, a three-year member of the Florida State Women’s Golf Team, has earned the prestigious Femina Perfecta Medallion, as voted on by her teammates and presented by the Seminole Boosters.
The award, which has been presented annually to a female from each of Florida State’s athletic teams since 2005, is presented to the student-athlete who personifies the ‘Complete Woman’ among her teammates. The definition of the award describes that each winner displays the tenants of strength, knowledge and tradition.
The athletes are nominated and voted on by their teammates, making it especially meaningful for Mangan.
“I appreciate this award, because it’s voted on by my teammates,” said Mangan. “I’m proud of how they see me, because I approach everything with positivity. During my career, I have had upperclassmen to look up to. I feel I have learned from them, taken what I’ve learned and used it to help our underclassmen.”
Amanda Doherty, another upperclassman on the women’s golf team described the mindset which with Mangan approaches every day.
“Ashley is always positive and supportive of everyone on the team,” said Doherty. “The energy Ashley brings every day is a positive influence on the whole team. She truly gives 100 percent to everything that she does on and off the golf course.”
Winning an award that is voted on by teammates is particularly interesting in a sport like golf because of the individual nature of the sport. The appreciation of individual accomplishments by the whole team helps bring them together.
“We are competing against each other and so it could be hard to come together,” said Mangan, “but I think we do a really good job as a team to root for each other even though someone is, maybe, qualifying over someone else, we are still cheering each other on at the same time.”
Mangan, who is majoring in Finance, was destined to win the award during her career as a Seminole because of her accomplishments on the course and for her work ethic and determination in the classroom.
Mangan’s accolades are no surprise to Seminole Head Coach Amy Bond, who said that Ashley stood out during her recruitment because of her academic success and clear leadership qualities.
“Ashley is a great ambassador for our golf program, both on and off the course,” said Bond. “Winning the Femina Perfecta Award for the Women’s Golf Team is a tremendous honor as the winner of the award was voted on by her teammates. Ashley is very deserving of this honor.”
When asked why she believed Mangan won, Bond responded: “Ashley stands out as a great leader. She takes initiative and is always looking out for others. She goes above and beyond to do what is necessary to help everyone become successful.”
When asked what advice she would give to future students in carrying on the award’s tradition, Mangan said: “In everything you do, do it with purpose. Do it well. Don’t go half in, go all in and always stay positive. You can get overwhelmed and all the negatives can pile up but if you just focus on the positive and push forward, you will be successful.”
